Climbing accommodation in the Peak District
Base Camp Hathersage · on the edge of Stanage
Sleep, climb, repeat
Why Base Camp Hathersage
Base Camp Hathersage sits at the foot of the longest gritstone escarpment in the country. Stanage Edge is about an hour’s walk from the door, Burbage and Froggatt are a short bus or pedal away, and the Hope Valley railway brings you in from Manchester or Sheffield without a car.

Crags from the front door
Stanage Edge · ~1 hour walk
The classic gritstone trad venue
A three-mile escarpment running from Stanage End in the north to High Neb and beyond. Everything from beginner cracks to the historic test pieces that shaped British climbing: Right Unconquerable, Goliath’s Groove, Quietus. Bring a rack of cams, a sense of humour about run-outs.
Burbage North & South · ~20 minutes by bike
Bouldering and short trad on Burbage gritstone
Friendly approach, brilliant bouldering on the Burbage boulders, and shorter trad lines for warm-up days. A natural Plan B when Stanage is in the cloud.
Froggatt & Curbar · bus or short drive
Bold slabs and classic gritstone arêtes
Some of the Peak’s most photogenic gritstone, with bold slabs at Froggatt (think Long John’s Slab), sharper edges at Curbar, and good problems for an evening session after Stanage.
Rest day · in the village
Hathersage Outdoor Pool, the deli, the pub
One of the country’s last open-air heated pools is in the village, and so is the deli for sandwiches and the Scotsmans Pack for a pint after the long day on the edge.
Getting in, getting out
By train, by bike, by car
By train. The Hope Valley line runs direct between Manchester and Sheffield, and Hathersage station is about ten minutes on foot from the front door. From London, change at Sheffield: roughly two hours total. Trains run hourly through the day and a folding rack will fit a rope and a bouldering pad if you’re careful with how it’s loaded.
By car. The village is on the A6187 in the Hope Valley. Parking in Hathersage is limited, so the public car park is the realistic option. The hostel is designed for car-free travel, which is the easier way to do it from anywhere on a railway line into Sheffield or Manchester.
